Transport & Environment’s mission is to promote, at EU and global level, a transport policy based on the principles of sustainable development. Transport policy should minimise harmful impacts on the environment and health, maximise efficiency of resources, including energy and land, and guarantee safety and sufficient access for all.

Transport & Environment has been developing a Rail Freight Platform in order to better understand how to optimally use rail in the freight market as a means to reduce the climate impact of transport. The Platform also contributes to a research project on low-carbon freight that is being lead by Fraunhofer ISI. This work is financed by the Stiftung Mercator and the European Climate Foundation.

This website outlines the challenges that the rail freight market is facing and provides policy recommendations for improving the current framework in Europe.
